Will changing the timing on my 89 Toyota truck give me more power..?

i have a 89 22re 4*4 toyota pick up and seem to lack power on hills and slight inclines, what can i do to get pull more power from the engine, had the compression checked and it is great . Is ther a way to adjust the timing to yeild more power...

thanks...Will changing the timing on my 89 Toyota truck give me more power..?Could be a plugged up catalytic converter, dirty fuel injectors, dirty air filter, weak coil, worn out plugs, do a tune up and make sure you have good air flow. Will changing the timing on my 89 Toyota truck give me more power..?Advancing the 'base' timing will yield slightly more power, but the engine will susceptible to more 'ping' under load. Tune up? Is timing chain/belt sloppy/worn? Check the basics to bring engine back to factory specs. Will changing the timing on my 89 Toyota truck give me more power..?If you have an ignition or other misfire of some of your cylinders, you may not feel it, but your %26quot;knock sensor%26quot; will and it then retards your timing and you lose power, especially on hills when the spark plugs are hardest to fire under heavy engine load. So make sure your spark plug wires aren't leaking spark off the wires to ground by parking the truck in a real dark spot so that you can look at the engine while you punch the accelerator and see if there's any visible sparks jumping around the plug wires. If so, check the continuity of each wire and you can use plastic %26quot;wire loom%26quot; to put around the plug wire where the spark is leaking off. If the plug wires have never been replaced, replace with a good set of wires. Will changing the timing on my 89 Toyota truck give me more power..?Sorry...changing the timing will not produce more power. If the vehicle timing is slightly advanced you might feel more power off the line but the truck will %26quot;ping%26quot; under a load, hence too far advanced. Also remember if you alter the timing the truck might not pass a %26quot;smog%26quot; inspection if your state requires one.

Toyota trucks with a 4 cylinder are not that powerful, but very fuel efficient.
