Will changing SATA configurations make me lose data?

I have a Dell Inspiron and I want to change the configurations from AHCI to ATA (because I'm trying to do a reinstallation of XP on my Dell laptop which was originally run by Vista, but I changed it to XP a long time ago...) I know that sounds counfusing but....

Does anyone know if that will cause me to lose all my previous data?

Thanks! Will changing SATA configurations make me lose data?It Might! I suggest you backup all your files to an external drive first. Though I must say, I've done the same a few times on customers' computers and nothing's happened, but still it ain't worth it to find out the hard way.
