My car idles bad at standstill and when taking off. Make sure you get the right sort. Also be sure the plug leads are good, but the car might need special MB leads.
Some people have found that making the spark plug gap 5 thousandths of an inch wider helps with the idle in some older models like the W126 (81 -91). Worth a try and you can always put it back to original if it does not work.
Look for vacuum leaks too. I doubt the fuel pump is the problem, if it is running and not making noises it is OK.
