My 98 merc mystique lost forward but has reverse and the fluid is full, will changing to new fluid help?

I called auto store they said it looks like I need to get a rebuild kit, can the average joe do this kind of work. thanksMy 98 merc mystique lost forward but has reverse and the fluid is full, will changing to new fluid help?Take it to a transmission shop. They will rebuild the transmission and you're looking at a $1,500 and up bill.My 98 merc mystique lost forward but has reverse and the fluid is full, will changing to new fluid help? No, changing fluid will not help. If you're on the cheap for a fix add Lucas Transmission Fix to your transmission. My 95 Toyota stopped shifting, I added this fluid, she's been fine ever since.

But, to me, it sounds like you have a linkage problem. If you have a repair manual it will tell you how to check it. It's a pretty easy do-it-yourself job.

However, should this not be the problem, it's time for a new tranny. My 98 merc mystique lost forward but has reverse and the fluid is full, will changing to new fluid help? You can usually get something to move if you have reverse. Take it to a pro for a diagnosis. Might just be a selector rod fallen off.

I would look into the wrecking yards and ask for the price installed. The other way is to get the model specific auto tranny repair manual for your car and then shop the web for the whole kit.

You will need to know somebody in the industry to let you in on the little secrets (did a Bronco twice because the book was wrong)

Get a big long bench and lay out the thrust washers and clutch packs as they are taken apart.

Get the case professionally cleaned. Have those guys work up the valve body also. Then just keep it clean and back together.
